And most know the quickest relief comes from using their medication as directed, especially during an attack. But there are other ways to quickly control asthma.

Sip a cup of hot soup. Actually, any warm liquid may lessen the severity of asthma attacks and quickly relieve them when they occur. Cold liquids irritate bronchial tubes, while warm liquids have the opposite effect. Even during an attack, warm drinks can soothe it in 5 to 60 minutes. During the day of an attack, I recommend drinking between six and eight glasses of warm water or another drink, continuing even after the attack ends. Every day you should have at least four to six glasses. The more liquids you consume, the less thick your mucus will be. And you do not wan thick mucus.

Have a cup of tea. That's regular tea, not herbal. Regular coffee will work, too. The caffeine opens airways much like the inhalers used by asthmatics. The relief the caffeine brings is not as quick as that from an inhaler, but it's just as effective and and a good thing to know if you have asthma and you forget to bring your inhaler. Cola will in a pinch, although if it's cold it can irritate bronchial tubes.

Get a flu shot. Viruses are one of the key factors that trigger asthma attacks. So get a flu shot every year.

Take time to acclimate to temperature changes. Any extreme of weather can trigger an attack, so take 5 minutes or so to try to acclimate. If you're coming from one extreme outside to another inside, stand in the foyer-or another place cooler than the rest of the building-for a few minutes to get your body used to the difference. And when it's cold, take an extra minute or so to put mask or scarf over your face and cover your neck.

Uncork mucus with a hearty morning cough. The cough reflex shuts down during sleep, but a hearty morning cough uncorks much of the mucus that can accumulate overnight in the bronchial tree.

Use your inhaler properly. Between 20 and 75 percent of people who use metered-dose inhalers to treat their asthma are using them incorrectly. You should place the inhaler about an inch and a half away from your mouth and begin breathing in before activating the inhaler. Hold your breath for 10 seconds and then breathe out normally.

Encourage kids to drink lots of liquids. Use a shot glass to trick kids into drinking more liquids than they might want. Children can be fooled into drinking the right amount of fluids by giving them a shot of liquid every 10 to 15 minutes.

Have a wheezing baby checked immediately. Do not wait-run to your doctor if you hear your baby wheezing. Breathing problems in an infant can become critical in a matter of hours. A pregnant woman with asthma symptoms should call a doctor also; if she can not breathe, neither can her baby.

Stick with methodical sports. Some exercise can trigger an asthmatic reaction that starts 6 or 7 minutes after exercise begins. But sport such as baseball, doubles in tennis, and golf are okay: They do not require the constant prolonged movement that can cause an asthma attack.

Think positively to breathe positively. Asthma, like other chronic diseases such as migraines and pain syndromes associated with cancer, can be treated with biofeedback, self-hypnosis, and other relaxation techniques. And that can be done in about 25 minutes a day.

Meanwhile, a study from England showed that asthmatics who regularly practice yoga breathing exercises significantly improved their condition.

It's the old business of mind over matter. The mind and body are highly connected, and thinking good thoughts and practicing positive imagery can improve some physical conditions. In past studies, we have found that some children who have learned self-hypnosis improved their asthma significantly. Dust mites can be gotten rid of and you need a very powerful vacuum cleaner (vacuum slowly and patiently for about five minutes one square foot) or by exposing them to extreme temperature, such as a 60 degrees washing machine cycle or around 12 hours in the freezer. A superbly clean house is not necessarily allergen free as the mites are usually inside cushions, sofas, pillows, mattresses and other bedding and puff out when you lay or sit on it.

You should swap carpets for wooden floors, remove pets from your house, invest in a good dehumidifier and vacuum cleaner; swap curtains for blinds, meticulously vacuum or steam clean your carpet and soft furnishings, hot wash and change your bedding and mattress covers; wipe all surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom with a chemical free cleaner (or simple mix water with lemon juice and vinegar) to wash away molds and bacteria deposits. If you use an inhaler, you may want to consider using a spacer with it. A spacer consists of a plastic tube with a mouth piece on one end and a hole on the other to insert the mouthpiece of the inhaler into it. You use the inhaler the same way you normally would, except you place your mouth on the mouthpiece of the spacer when inhaling the medication.

Why should you invest in a spacer, or even take the trouble to use one?
There are three main reasons. 1) Using a spacer maximizes the availability of the medication from the inhaler that gets into your lungs. When you use an inhaler by itself, there are many things you can do wrong to prevent all of the medication from getting into your airways. Many people do not hold their breath after using the inhaler, or do not inhale slowly enough for all of the medication to reach the lungs. Even if you use it correctly, there are large particles which get cooked in the back of your mouth and throat that when swallowed cause side effects. This leads to the next reason, 2) Using a spacer decreases the amount of side effects you may have from using your inhaler by itself. The spacer blocks the large particles from leaving and only allows the small particles to enter your airways directly. Finally, 3) Using a spacer can reduce the risk of getting thrush-an oral fungal infection-from using a corticosteroid inhaler such as fluticasone (Flovent). In addition to using a spacer to prevent thrush, make sure to brush your teeth or rinse your mouth right after using this type of medication.

Manufacturers recommend to change spacers every 6-12 months, but if taken care of (proper washing and hygiene), they can be used for years. Would I recommend a spacer to patients who use an inhaler? YES-they CAN be affordable and they really take away the lack of proper use of the inhaler. There are a few different brands available, and if you try to buy them at a regular pharmacy you will usually find that they are very expensive (around $ 35- $ 50 dollars). In addition, many insurance plans do not cover spacers. However, you can get the same one you would buy at the pharmacy on the internet for much cheaper. For example, I have seen a few on Amazon for around $ 12.

Can Milk Cause Asthma Symptoms Such As Wheezing – Does It Cause Mucus Production?

It is widely considered by many people suffering from asthma, that drinking milk can cause excess mucus or phlegm production which in turn will lead to asthmatic symptoms.

In fact even I have believed this to be true in the past. I have convinced myself that drinking dairy milk was worsening my asthma. I even switched to drinking soy milk for many years, having to acquire a taste to that controversial milk type, until I found out how dangerous that is!

So to answer your question, no I do not believe that milk does cause asthma. This is a total misconception. Recent studies have proven no link between drinking milk and asthma or excessive mucus production. Unless you have some sort of intolerance to dairy milk, drinking milk will not cause asthma.

I know there are a lot of people out there saying otherwise and they are attracted to their opinions. My personal opinion is that no food on this planet can cause asthma. If it did, everyone who drinks or eats that particular food would develop asthmatic symptoms. But we know that is not true. It may trigger asthma but only those with an existing intolerance. The only way to tell if you are intolerant is by finding out for yourself. Do not believe whatever anybody says about this issue. Milk is a nutritional staple in many people's diet and you should not just exclude it because of something you read on the internet.

This is especially important if you are a parent of an asthmatic child. Milk is one of the best foods for a growing body. It provides high amounts of protein and other essential vitamins and minerals for growth and development including calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin, vitamin A and zinc.

However in saying that animal proteins or excessive amounts should I say, can contribute or trigger asthma symptoms in some circumstances. So it is not a problem exclusive to milk, but anything which contains animal proteins such as meats and other dairy products such as cheese and yoghurt. If you are concerned and you do believe that milk is causing you or somebody you love to become asthmatic, try coconut milk, almond milk or rice milk.

Personally I drink milk and have been living asthma free for many years. I know that it is not milk or anything for that matter in my diet that will determine whether or not I develop asthmatic symptoms providing I follow the 2 Golden rules.

They thrive in humid environments, feed on dead skin and are living in all fibrous materials such as bedding which is a favorite place, sofas, upholstery, blankets, carpets and even clothing.

Fortunately there are a number of things you can do it eliminate them:

  • Use a High Efficiency Particulate Air Filter or HEPA to control airborne dust mites and other allergens
  • Use a HEPA Vacuum to regularly clean carpets, bedding, upholstery and all other fibrous materials
  • Wash all sheets and blankets in hot water, 60 deg C or 130 degrees F. Dry in hot dryer. This will kill dust mites
  • Use mattress and pillow protectors made for controlling dust mites
  • Adjust the humidity levels within you home to be no higher than 50%. Dust mites love and thrive in a humid climate

Not all children simply grow out of their asthma. It is a chronic and life threatening condition which should not be treated light heartedly. The good news is if you TAKE ACTION there is a great chance to avoid your child developing asthma.
