Dizziness turns to unconsciousness and the body collapses.

Things I Did to Cope Up With Asthma

I developed allergic rhinitis as a young boy, and by the time I got into College, I started experiencing asthma attacks as well. Life is difficult for an asthma sufferer like me, and other people out there suffering from the same condition would agree with me about that.

You probably know that asthma and allergic rhinitis are considered by most experts as “incurable” medical conditions. Yes, they are manageable, but you can not really get them out of your system, and they can strike again without warning if triggered. I agree with this, because even if I was able to control my condition, there are times that I still experienced attacks, although not as frequent.

Perhaps the reason that I do not experience attacks more often these days is that I have learned how to control the condition. I know I am not fully invulnerable to asthma, but if I stick to doing the right things, there's no way it's going to bother me at the same level that it used to.

Now, what things have I done to manage my condition, you ask? Well, I would say it has a lot to do with the things that I put in my mouth, and ever, my entire bodily system. In many cases, asthma can be triggered when the sufferer is exposed to much irritant such as dust, pollen, and animal dander. This is true for me and moving out from the house I grow up in and starting my own family in a different city really helped.

You see, besides the fact that the house I grow up in is already very old and dusty, there is also a high pollen count in the area where we used to live. When I got rid of those triggers, I was able to breathe a lot easier.

I believe that changing my overall diet also contributed a lot. I consumed less wheat be cutting back on pasta, pizza, bread, and whole wheat products. I then added more fruits and vegetables to my diet and increase my intake of omega-3 and omega-6. I also ate more poultry, seafood, meat, and egg. Most importantly, I cut back on processed food.

How did this help me fight asthma? For one, the vitamins and minerals I got from this diet helped my body fight inflammatory conditions. Since my diet is low in carbohydrates, it helps keep my plasma serotonin levels from spiking up. For your information, very high serotonin levels can trigger bronchoconstriction. Also, my diet is very rich in phytonutrients, which as you all know have anti-inflammatory properties.

In a few months' time, I was able to reduce my weight, and I felt healthy and experienced no attacks at all. I can not say that I am fully cured of asthma, but what I can tell you guys is that the changes I made to my lifestyle really had a great impact to my health.

Does Asthma Cause Claustrophobia?

I'm asthmatic and have claustrophobia. Does being asthmatic necessarily mean you're going to suffer, also, from claustrophobia? Maybe. I read about this in Prevention magazine. It seems that recent studies show that there is a striking connection between asthma and psychological problems, ie depression and anxiety. If you've ever been in a situation where you have not been able to breath, it's not hard then for the mind to extrapolate, “small place, no air.” In the last year or so I've, unfortunately, had some anxiety attacks thought about by asthma. For example, during our trip to Russia I acquired some bug. When we returned, I was sick for a good 6 weeks with coughing, sinus problems etc. So the coughing exacerbates the asthma. I'm going to my allergist, taking all kinds of stuff and still having trouble breathing. One night I wake up in a sweat and am gasing for air.

I tried not to panic. I was able to slow my breathing down and work my way out of it. But it was scary as hell. I can not imagine what it would be like to have a fully blown panic attack. But, back to asthma and claustrophobia. I've tried to overcome the phobia. A few years ago while in Rome (oh, another vacation dropper), we decided to go to the top of St.. Peter's Basilica. I can not watch. If a terrorist wanted info from me, just threaten to put me in a small cell with no window and withhold my rescue inhaler … I'll talk, I'll talk !!!!! Oh, and no, no scuba diving. Enveloped by water and breathing through a small tube? I do not think so …
